First, get safe

  1. Turn on your hazard lights and steer toward the right shoulder, or the exit if you can reach it.
  2. Stop as far from traffic as you can. Keep your seat belt on if you are staying inside.
  3. If you must leave the car, exit on the side away from traffic and stand well off the road behind a barrier.
  4. If you are in danger, hurt, or the car is in a travel lane, call 911.

What to tell dispatch

Say the direction you are heading (east or west), the nearest exit or mile marker, and which side the car is on. A freeway call without a mile marker takes longer to find.

Desert heat

Summer pavement and engine bay temperatures are high. Overheating, tire blowouts and battery failures are common causes of breakdowns on this stretch. If you are waiting in the car, run the air conditioning only if the engine is safe to run, and keep water with you.

Where to go next

Tell dispatch whether you want the car taken to a shop in the valley, back to your home or to a dealership. A flatbed carries the car so the wheels do not turn.
